　　China's first domestically-built large cruise ship, the "Adora Magic City", is delivered in Shanghai, with its maiden voyage scheduled for Jan. 1, 2024. To date, China has been able to build an aircraft carrier, a large liquified natural gas carrier and a large cruise ship -- the most challenging shipbuilding projects, according to the CSSC.

　　China's Fendouzhe (Striver) deep-sea manned submersible completes 10 consecutive hours of operations at the deepest point of the Diamantina Trench, and is successfully retrieved by the scientific research ship Tansuo (Exploration) -1.

February 26-28

　　The second plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is held in Beijing from February 26 to 28, 2023. The session is attended by 203 members and 170 alternate members of the 20th CPC Central Committee. Deputy secretaries of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and leading officials of related departments attend as non-voting participants. Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, delivers an important speech at the session which is presided over by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. At the session, the Central Committee hears and discusses the report on the work of the Political Bureau, presented by Xi Jinping on behalf of the Political Bureau. The session reviews and adopts a list of proposed candidates for the leading positions of state institutions to be recommended to the first session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), and a list of proposed candidates for the leadership of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee to be recommended to the first session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee. The Political Bureau has extensively solicited opinions within and outside the Party for putting forward the lists, which have also been discussed time and again. The plenary session decides to recommend the two lists respectively to the presidium of the first session of the 14th NPC and the presidium of the first session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee. The session deliberates and adopts a plan on reform of Party and state institutions. The plan is put forward on the basis of extensively soliciting opinions. Xi Jinping delivers explanatory remarks on the draft plan on reform of Party and state institutions. It is agreed at the session that part of the reform plan will be submitted to the first session of the 14th NPC for deliberation in accordance with due legal procedures.

　　The First Session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is held. At the session, Wang Yang delivers a work report of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee.

March 5-13

　　The First Session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) is held. Li Keqiang delivers a government work report at the meeting. Zhao Leji is elected chairman of the 14th National People's Congress Standing Committee. Lawmakers review a report from the State Council on the implementation of the 2022 plan for national economic and social development and on the 2023 draft plan, as well as the draft plan for national economic and social development in 2023. They also review a report from the State Council on the execution of the central and local budgets for 2022 and on the draft central and local budgets for 2023, as well as the draft central and local budgets for 2023. Resolutions on the work reports of the 13th NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, as well as a revision to the Legislation Law are also adopted.

　　The CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting is held in Beijing. Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, attends the meeting via video link and delivers a keynote address proposing the Global Civilization Initiative.

March 20-22

　　Chinese President Xi Jinping pays a state visit to Russia from March 20 to 22 at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. The two leaders have sincere, friendly and fruitful talks on bilateral ties and major regional and international issues of mutual interest, and reach new and important common understanding in many fields. The two leaders sign and issue a joint statement and emphasize the need to resolve the Ukraine crisis through dialogue.

　　The China-Central Asia Summit, the first in-person summit among heads of state of China and Central Asian countries, is held from May 18 to 19 in Xi'an. Chinese President Xi Jinping chairs the summit. The leaders are expected to draw up new blueprints for China-Central Asia cooperation. The summit is seen as the latest landmark in the vibrant high-level interactions, economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between China and Central Asian countries.

　　The C919, China's self-developed large passenger aircraft, successfully completes its first commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing on Sunday, marking its official entry into the civil aviation market.

May 30

　　Launched on May 30, 2023, the Shenzhou-16 spaceship sends the trio to China's space station core module Tianhe, where they live and work for five months. During their stay, they perform extravehicular activities once, deliver a live class from the space station, and conduct a series of space-science experiments and in-orbit payload experiments. The trio returns to Earth safely on Oct. 31, 2023. The Shenzhou-16 mission is the first crewed mission for the application and development stage of China's space station. It is also the first time that three types of astronaut -- pilot, flight engineer and payload expert -- have carried out a mission together.
