February 25

The All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and seven other organizations issued a joint proposal, calling for all Chinese people, young people in particular, to participate in etiquette activities centered on “five stresses and four beauties” (the five stresses are on decorum, manners, hygiene, discipline and morals; and the four beauties are the beauty of the mind, the language, the behavior and the environment). Following the 12th CPC National Congress in 1982, activities centered on the “three loves” (namely, love of the motherland, socialism and the CPC) were held in many places. All of these were merged to become unified activities centering on “five stresses, four beauties and three loves.”


June 27

   The 6th Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee adopted the Resolution on Certain Questions in the History of the Party since the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, which justly reviewed major historical events of the Party over the 32 years following the founding of the PRC, especially the “Cultural Revolution,” appraised the historical position of Mao Zedong in a matter-of-fact way, and fully expounded the great significance of Mao Zedong Thought as the guiding thought for the Party. On June 29, the Session elected Hu Yaobang chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Deng Xiaoping chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission.


August 27–September 25

   High-ranking officials from the entire military force participated in intensive training that focused on the front army’s mobilization and execution of defensive campaigns at the early stage of war. During the period, the Beijing Military Area Command mobilized the front army to hold defensive campaign exercises in North China. In his speech delivered at the military parade following the end of the exercises, Deng Xiaoping stated that efforts must be made to build the Chinese army into a powerful revolutionary army that was modernized and standardized.


September 30

   Ye Jianying, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, delivered a speech to reporters from the Xinhua News Agency, in which he further elaborated on the nine guidelines and policies concerning the return of Taiwan to the motherland and the realization of China’s peaceful reunification.

 

October 17

   The CPC Central Committee and the State Council adopted Several Decisions on the Creation of More Opportunities, Economic Invigoration and Resolution of Urban Employment Problems. 


November 7–16

   The Chinese women’s volleyball team won seven out of seven games and obtained its first world championship at the Third FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Osaka, Japan. By 1986, the Chinese women’s volleyball team had won five world championships in succession at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup, the FIVB Volleyball World Championship and the Olympic Games.
