March 8–25

   To demonstrate that the Chinese people had the determination, means and capabilities to safeguard the reunification of the motherland and deter separatist forces of Taiwan, the PLA conducted missile launching exercises and air-sea live ammunition drills in the East and South China Seas, and joint land-sea-air exercises in the Taiwan Straits. On June 30, 1998, the US President Bill Clinton, during his visit to China, publicly reiterated that the United States supported neither “Taiwan independence,” nor “one China, one Taiwan” or “two Chinas,” he did not favor Taiwan to join any international organization that must be involved as a sovereign state.


March 19

   The Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held a meeting on the stability of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In 1997, the CPC Central Committee sent a number of productive forces from inland provinces and municipalities, state organs and important state-owned enterprises to work in Xinjiang. Later on, counterpart support for Xinjiang kept increasing. 


October 10

   The 6th Plenary Session of the 14th CPC Central Committee adopted the Resolutions on Certain Important Questions Concerning Further Promoting the Building of Socialist Culture and Ideology, which pointed out that a socialist society was one that developed and progressed comprehensively, and that socialist modernization was the coordinated integration of material progress with the building of socialist culture and ideology.
