1959

March 28

The State Council promulgated the Decree on Dissolving the Local Government Tibet, declaring that the Preparatory Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region was to exercise the function of  the local government of  Tibet. Before that, on March 10, the Tibetan upper-stratum reactionaries had torn up the 17-Article Agreement and instigated an armed rebellion. On March 20, the PLA troops stationed in Tibet had been ordered to put down the rebellion. On March 22, the CPC Central Committee had been given instructions on implementing democratic reform while suppressing the rebellion. By the end of 1960, the democratic reforms in Tibet was fundamentally completed, thoroughly destroying the former society of feudal serfdom under a theocracy and liberating around a million serfs and slaves.


April 5

Rong Guotuan won the men’s singles title at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships, the first world championship won by a player from the PRC.


April 17–29

The 1st Session of  the 3rd CPPCC National Committee was held. Mao Zedong was elected honorary chairman and Zhou Enlai chairman of the Committee.


April 18–28

The 1st Session of the 2nd NPC was convened. Liu Shaoqi was elected chairman of the PRC, Zhu De chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and Zhou Enlai was appointed as premier of the State Council.


July 2–August 1

An enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee was held in Lushan. Originally the topic of  the meeting was summing up the experiences and lessons of the “Great Leap Forward” and continuously correcting the “Leftist” mistakes, but the later part of the Meeting saw unjustifiable criticism of Peng Dehuai and others. From August 2 to 16, the 8th Plenary Session of the 8th CPC Central Committee was convened in Lushan. Following the Session, struggle against Right deviationists was erroneously carried out throughout the Party.


End of August

  The construction of the Great Hall of the People was completed, and it was known as one of the “Ten Great Constructions” built in the same year, with the other nine being the China Revolutionary History Museum, Chinese People’s Revolutionary Military Museum, Cultural Palace of  Nationalities, National Agriculture Exhibition Hall, Workers Stadium, Beijing Railway Station, Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Minzu Hotel and Overseas Chinese Hotel.


September 13–October 3

The 1st National Games was held in Beijing.


September 17

Liu Shaoqi signed the Order of Special Pardon from the President of the People’s Republic of China, granting amnesty firstly for those from Chiang Kai-shek’s clique who had reformed themselves and the war criminals of  Manchukuo. By March 1975, a total of seven batches of detained war criminals had been given pardon and citizenship.


November 1

The First Tractor Works of China went into operation in Luoyang, Henan Province.
