The Central Red Army breaks through three consecutive blockades of the KMT army, and suffers major losses in the Battle of the Xiang River, the fourth blockade. After crossing the Xiang River, the Central Red Army is sharply reduced from more than 86,000 troops at the start of the Long March to more than 30,000 troops.
October
After the Long March of the main forces of the Central Red Army, the CPC Central Committee sets up the Central Sub-Bureau of the Soviet Area and the Central Military Region headed by Xiang Ying and the Office of the Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic headed by Chen Yi to lead the Red Army and guerrillas remaining in the southern bases to persevere in the struggle. The Southern Guerrilla War lasts for three years and covers more than 10 regions in eight provinces, which strongly supports the strategic shift of the main forces of the Red Army and preserves the revolutionary forces. During this period, Qu Qiubai and others die.
