As of December 31, 2023, the total number of members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was 99.185 million, a net increase of 1.144 million or 1.2% from the end of 2022.
The CPC now has 5.176 million primary-level organizations, a net increase of 111,000 or 2.2% from the end of 2022. Among them, there are 298,000 primary-level Party committees, 325,000 general Party branches, and 4,554,000 Party branches.
I. Situation of Party Members
By sex, ethnicity and educational background, There were 30.185 million female Party members, accounting for 30.4% of its total membership; 7.592 million Party members from ethnic minority groups, accounting for 7.7% of the total; and 55.786 million Party members with junior college degrees or above, accounting for 56.2% of the total. By age, there were 12.412 million Party members aged 30 and below, 11.196 million aged 31 to 35, 10.864 million aged 36 to 40, 9.459 million aged 41 to 45, 9.071 million aged 46 to 50, 9.405 million aged 51 to 55, 8.907 million aged 56 to 60, and 27.872 million aged 61 and above.
By the time of joining the Party, 68,000 Party members joined the CPC before the founding of the People's Republic of China, 12,863,000 joined after the founding of the People's Republic of China and before the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the CPC, 60,142,000 joined after the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the CPC and before the 18th CPC National Congress, and 26,112,000 joined after the 18th CPC National Congress.
By occupation, among the Party members, there were 6,643,000 workers (ground skilled staff), 26,075,000 farmers, herders and fishermen, 16,190,000 professional and technical staff in enterprises, public organizations, and social organizations, 11,453,000 managerial staff in enterprises, public organizations, and social organizations, 7,645,000 staff in Party and governmental organizations, 2,771,000 students, 7,764,000 of other occupations, and 20,644,000 retired persons.
II. Development of Party Members
In 2023, a total of 2.408 million people joined the CPC.
By sex, ethnicity, age and educational background, among the new Party members, 1.105 million were female, accounting for 45.9%; 252,000 were from ethnic minorities, accounting for 10.5%; 1.983 million were aged 35 or below, accounting for 82.4%; and 1.280 million held junior college degrees or above, accounting for 53.1%.
By occupation, in 2023, the CPC recruited 158,000 workers (ground skilled staff), 375,000 farmers, herders and fishermen, 351,000 professional and technical staff in enterprises, public organizations, and social organizations, 267,000 managerial staff in enterprises, public organizations, and social organizations, 119,000 staff in Party and governmental organizations, 919,000 students, and 218,000 of other occupations. And 1.276 million new Party members were in the front line of production and work.
III. Intra-party Commendations
In 2023, 138,000 primary-level Party organizations were commended for their advancements, and 693,000 Party members and 199,000 Party workers were commended for their excellence. A total of 795,000 commemorative medals of "50 Years of Glory in the Party" were awarded throughout the year.
IV. Application for Party Membership
By the end of 2023, there were 20.980 million applicants for party membership and 10.547 million activists of Party application nationwide.
V. Information of Party Organizations
Local Party committees. The CPC had a total of 3,199 local party committees at all levels across the country, including 31 provincial (/district-level/municipal) Party committees, 397 municipal (/prefecture-level) Party committees, and 2,771 county-level (/municipal/district-level/banner-level) Party committees.
Party organizations in sub-districts, townships, communities, and administrative villages. Party organizations had been established in 9,125 sub-districts, 29,620 townships, 119,437 communities, and 488,959 administrative villages across the country, with a coverage rate of more than 99.9%. Party organizations in organs, public institutions, enterprises and social organizations. There were a total of 771,000 primary-level Party organizations in organs, 997,000 in public institutions, 1.60 million in enterprises, and 183,000 in social organizations throughout the country, basically realizing the principle of "building a Party organization wherever it is needed".
