Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC, led by Xi Jinping, has addressed the question of what socialism with Chinese characteristics means in the new era, and how they should go about achieving it, thereby formalizing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

The 19th CPC National Congress, held in October 2017, established the guiding status of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, incorporating it into the Party's Constitution, which stipulates: "The Communist Party of China uses Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Theory of Three Represents, the Scientific Outlook on Development, and Xi Jinping Thought on Social- ism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its guides to action.” This reflects the new progress of the CPC on its guiding principles. In March 2018, the first session of the 13th NPC adopted a Constitutional amendment, establishing the guiding position of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in state politics and social life.

In the Report to the 19th CPC National Congress, the core contents of Xi's Thought are elaborated with “8 areas made clear” and “14 principles that must be upheld". The 8 areas summarize the CPC's theoretical advancement and reflect its new theoretical achievements on scientific socialism, forming the core of the Thought. The 14 principles constitute the basic guidelines of upholding and developing Chinese socialism in the new era, summarizing the latest principles of state governance of the Party, with a focus on practice and implementation. The“8+14”combination is a crystallization of the CPC Central Committee's exploration of the laws of building Chinese socialism.

Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is the continuation and development of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Important Thought of Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development. It is the latest achievement of applying Marxism in China, the crystallization of the experience and collective wisdom of the Party and the people, an important component of the theoretical system of Chinese socialism, and an action guide for rejuvenating the Chinese nation. We must always uphold the Thought and make efforts to develop it.
