The 19th National Congress of the CPC——中共十九大

The 19th National Congress of the CPC was held in Beijing from October 18 to 24, 2017.

2,280 full delegates and 74 special delegates attended, representing 89 million CPC members nationwide. On behalf of the 18th CPC Central Committee, Xi Jinping delivered a report entitled “Secure a Decisive Victory in Building a Moderately Prosperous Society in All Respects and Strive for the Great Success of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era".

On the basis of an analysis of the developments in the international and domestic environments and a review of the Party's work and the historic changes over the previous five years, the congress concluded that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era and the princi pal problem confronting Chinese society lies in the conflict between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life. The congress deliberated on the Party's historic mission in the new era and established the historical position of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It set forth the basic policy for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, and established the goal of successfully building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and then embarking on a journey to fully build a modern socialist China. The congress also set out an overall plan for advancing socialism with Chinese characteristics and Party development in the new era. The congress adopted the revised Constitution of the Communist Party of China, establishing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as a guiding thought that must be upheld in the long run.

The Central Committee, consisting of 204 members and 172 alternate members, and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of 133 members was elected at the congress. Subsequently, at the First Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and its Standing Committee were elected, with Xi Jinping as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. At the same time Xi was appointed chairman of the Central Military Committee, and Zhao Leji's nomination as secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection was approved.

The 19th National Congress of the CPC played an important role in the decisive stage of completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the critical stage of Chinese socialism entering the new era. Every one of us in the Party must remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, strive for the great success of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and work tirelessly to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
