Beijing, February 21 (Xinhua): Xi Jinping’s book On the History of the Communist Party of China, edited by the Institute of Party History and Literature of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), contains 40 of Xi Jinping’s major works from November 29, 2012 to November 24, 2020 on the history of the CPC. The gist of the main articles of the book is presented below.

“Realizing National Rejuvenation Has Been the Greatest Dream of the Chinese Nation since Modern Times” is a speech delivered by Xi Jinping on November 29, 2012 when he visited the exhibition “The Road to Rejuvenation.” The article states that: The realization of national rejuvenation has been the greatest dream of the Chinese nation since modern times. This dream is the long-cherished wish of several generations of Chinese people, reflects the overall interests of the Chinese nation and the Chinese people, and is the common expectation of every Chinese person. History tells us that the future of each individual is closely linked to the future of the country and the nation. Individuals can do well only when the country and the nation do well. Today, we are closer than ever to the goal of national rejuvenation, and more confident than ever in our ability to realize this goal. 

“A Correct Understanding of the Two Historical Periods before and after Reform and Opening Up” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at a seminar on the guiding principles from the 18th National Party Congress for new members and alternate members of the CPC Central Committee on January 5, 2013. The article states that: There were two historical periods before and after the reform and opening up policy was introduced in the late 1970s, which are interrelated and significantly different from each other, but both are essentially about the practical exploration of the socialist construction led by our Party. The historical period of reform and opening up cannot be used to negate the historical period before reform and opening up, and vice versa. The practical exploration of socialism before reform and opening up accumulated the conditions for the practical exploration of socialism after the reform and opening up policy was implemented, and the practical exploration of socialism after the implementation of the reform and opening up policy has been the preservation, reform and development of what was achieved in the previous period.

“Studying History and Loving the Party and the Country” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speeches between March 2013 and August 2020. The article states that: History is the best textbook and the best teacher. We should study the history of both the Party and the country and remain patriotic and dedicated to them. We should understand the history of the Party and the country, learn from their historical experience, and fully understand the major events and important figures in their history. We should carry out extensive publicity and education with a focus on such important issues as why the CPC and Marxism work for China and why socialism with Chinese characteristics is good. We should strengthen public communication guidance and ensure that officials and the people are confident in the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

“To Uphold and Develop Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, We Must Study the History of the Party and the Country” is a speech made by Xi Jinping when he presided over the seventh group study session of the Political Bureau of the 18th CPC Central Committee on June 25, 2013. The article states that: To uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics and advance the cause of the Party and the country, we must study the history of the Party and the country. This is a required course that must be studied well. In upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new historical conditions, we must keep to our own path, be in line with the world trend, represent the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people, strengthen the Party, and be firmly confident in socialism with Chinese characteristics.

“The History of the Chinese Revolution Is the Best Nutrient” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speeches in Hebei on July 11 and 12, 2013, when he was researching and guiding the campaign to heighten awareness of and implement the Party’s mass line. The article states that: Xibaipo is a revolutionary sacred place where the Party Central Committee and Mao Zedong commanded the three major campaigns during the War of Liberation and guided the revolution to nationwide victory to establish the People’s Republic of China. Mao Zedong put forward the important idea of “two imperatives”“[1] here. The significance of this room where we are meeting is extraordinary. This is the place where rules were established. The establishment and implementation of the Party’s rules has given a strong impetus to improving the Party’s conduct and discipline. We must continue to learn and understand the profound idea and strategic considerations of Mao Zedong’s “two imperatives.” We should seriously and solemnly raise this issue with the whole Party and urge its members to always be modest and prudent, and strive hard, so that so that our Party will never change its nature and our country will betray its color.

 “Telling the Stories of the Communist Party of China Well” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s writings from September 2013 to September 2020. The article states that: It is very important to tell the stories of the Chinese nation, the CPC, the People’s Republic of China, socialism with Chinese characteristics, reform and opening up, and especially of the new era, well. This should be done to guide Party members and officials in constantly examining and strengthening their will to fulfill their original aspirations and constantly refine the political character of loyalty, honesty and responsibility.

“The Revolutionary Spirit is a Valuable Asset of the Party and the Country” is an excerpt from the writings of Xi Jinping from November 2013 to November 2020. The article states that: Every period of revolutionary history of our Party is a vivid teaching material of ideals and convictions. All Party members must not forget their original aspirations and continue to move forward. They must always remember the revolutionary forefathers who sacrificed their life or blood for national independence and people’s liberation, always maintain the spirit of struggle of the Chinese Communists, always maintain their loyalty to the people, and strive to create a better and happier life for the people.

“The Old Revolutionary Bases are the Roots of the Party and the People’s Military” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speeches between November 2013 and August 2020. The article states that: The old revolutionary bases are the roots of the Party and the people’s military. Every time I visit the old revolutionary bases for research, I go to visit the revolutionary history memorial sites, which is to caution all Party members not to forget how the red government came about, how the People’s Republic of China came about, and how today’s happy life came about. I do this also to declare that the CPC will always hold high the red banner, firmly take the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and keep pushing forward the cause started by our forefathers.

“Speech at a Ceremony Marking the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Mao Zedong” was delivered by Xi Jinping on December 26, 2013. The speech comprehensively and scientifically evaluates the historical merits and position of Mao Zedong and Mao Zedong Thought and systematically discusses the basic connotation of the living soul of Mao Zedong Thought and the requirements of the times. It emphasizes the need to always adhere to the Marxist stance, viewpoint and method, adhere to a comprehensive and correct view of history, adhere to seeking truth from facts, the mass line and independence, unwaveringly follow the correct path opened up by the Party and the people in their long-term practical exploration, and continue to advance the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

     “Revering, Learning from, and Cherishing Our Heroes” is an excerpt from the writings of Xi Jinping from May 2014 to October 2020. The article states that: The Chinese nation is a nation of heroes; it reveres heroes and ensures they emerge. Heroes are also needed in times of peace. For all the heroic and exemplary people who have made dedication and sacrifice for the Party, the country and the people, we should carry forward their spirit and draw from them the power to make progress. The entire Party and the whole of society should revere, learn from heroes, and cherish our heroes to promote their spirit, in order to gather the majestic power for realizing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

     “Speech at a Ceremony Marking the 110th Anniversary of the Birth of Deng Xiaoping” is a speech made by Xi Jinping on August 20, 2014. The speech highly evaluates the historical position and merits of Deng Xiaoping and Deng Xiaoping Theory, and profoundly expounds the lofty spirit of Deng Xiaoping in terms of firm convictions, love for the people, seeking truth from facts, breaking new ground and innovation, strategic thinking, and magnanimity and selflessness. The speech stresses that the most important theoretical and political legacy left to us by Deng Xiaoping is the socialism with Chinese characteristics that he led the Party and the people to create, and the Deng Xiaoping Theory that he founded. The speech calls on the whole Party to forge ahead with utter determination and full confidence in the path, theory and system of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the journey to realize the Two Centenary Goals and the the Chinese Dream of National Rejuvenation.

     “The Political Work Championed for Our Military at the Gutian Meeting Has Played a Decisive Role in the Military’s Survival and Development” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the Military Political Work Conference on October 31, 2014. The article states that: The Gutian Meeting corrected and purged various non-proletarian ideas and formed the famous Gutian Meeting resolution in the history of our Party and our military. This meeting established the Marxist principle of building the Party and the military, defined the policy, principles and system of political work of our military, and put forward the principle and direction to solve the fundamental problem of building the military with peasants as the main component into a new type of proletarian people’s military. The Gutian Meeting brought about the rebirth of our military. Since then, under Party leadership, our military has grown from small to large, from weak to strong, and from victory to victory. The political work championed for our military at the Gutian Meeting has played a decisive role in the military’s survival and development.

“Continuing to Draw Strength from the Yan’an Spirit” an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the end of his visit to Shaanxi on February 15, 2015. The article states that: Yan’an is a revolutionary sacred place. The Yan’an period was the period when the Chinese revolution led by our Party moved from a low tide to a high tide and achieved a historic turnaround. The fine traditions and conduct left behind by the old generation of revolutionaries and the old generation of Communists in the Yan’an period, and the Yan’an Spirit they cultivated with a firm and correct political direction, the intellectual line of freeing the mind and seeking truth from facts, the fundamental purpose of wholeheartedly serving the people, and the work style of self-reliance and hard work are a precious legacy of our Party. Today, the Party should continue to draw strength from the Yan’an spirit for its comprehensive strict self-governance.

“Summarizing the Party’s Historical Experience and Firmly Establishing the Four Consciousnesses” is an excerpt from the writings of Xi Jinping from June 2015 to January 2018. The article states that: The history of the Party and the People’s Republic of China tells us that to govern our Party and our country well, it is crucial to ensure the unity and centralization of the Party and safeguard the authority of the Party Central Committee. “Ensuring the Jinggang Mountains Spirit Radiates the New Light of Our Time” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the end of his visit to Jiangxi on February 3, 2016. The article states that: The Jinggang Mountains are the cradle of the Chinese revolution. The most valuable treasure left to us from the Jinggang Mountains period is the Jinggang Mountains Spirit that spans time and space. The most important aspect of this spirit is firm convictions, hard work, seeking truth from facts, daring to blaze new paths, relying on the people, and the courage to win. The most important thing for ensure that the Jinggang Mountains Spirit radiates the new light of our time Combined under the new contemporary conditions is to firmly pursue the ideal, blaze new paths realistically, hard work to overcome difficulties, and rely on the people for victory.

“Speech at a Ceremony Marking the 95th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China” is a speech made by Xi Jinping on July 1, 2016. The speech comprehensively reviews and summarizes the great historical contributions made and the significant historical experiences gained by the CPC for the Chinese nation over the previous 95 years by relying closely on the people. The article states that: Ninety-five years have gone by in the history of the CPC , but we must forever preserve the fighting spirit that Chinese communists demonstrated when the CPC was first founded, and forever preserve our devotion to our people. There can be no future for a people who do not remember the road that brought them to where they are today. “Studying the Histories of the CPC, the PRC, Reform and Opening Up, and Socialist Development” is an excerpt from the writings of Xi Jinping from December 2016 to November 2020. “The New Era: The Historic Mission of the Communist Party of China” is an excerpt from the report of Xi Jinping at the 19th CPC National Congress on October 18, 2017. The article states that: At its founding, the Communist Party of China made realizing Communism its highest ideal and its ultimate goal, and shouldered the historic mission of national rejuvenation. In pursuing this goal, the Party has united the Chinese people and led them through arduous struggles to epic accomplishments. Achieving national rejuvenation will be no walk in the park; it will take more than drum beating and gong clanging to get there. The speech profoundly summarizes the great achievements and valuable experiences of the Party and the state in the past 40 years of reform and opening up. It highly praises the outstanding contribution of the Chinese people to reform and opening up. It solemnly declares that reform and opening up is an ongoing process with no endpoint and that the Chinese people are confident and determined to carry out reform and opening up unswervingly to the end. The speech categorically defines the targets and requirements of driving reform in all areas to a deeper level, expanding opening up to the outside world, and continuously advancing reform and opening up in the new era. The article states that: Reform and opening up is a great awakening of our Party, and it is this great awakening that has given birth to the great creation of our Party from theory to practice. Reform and opening up is a great revolution in the history of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, and it is this great revolution that greatly transformed the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. “Speech at a Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the May 4th Movement” was made by Xi Jinping on April 30, 2019. The article states that: the May 4th Movement was the turning point of China’s old-democratic revolution toward the new-democratic revolution, and has been of milestone significance in the historical process of the Chinese nation’s pursuit of national independence and development and progress since modern times. The article states that: The Jinggang Mountains Spirit and the Soviet Area Spirit, which carries the original aspirations and founding mission of the Chinese Communists, has forged the great revolutionary spirit of the CPC. This great revolutionary spirit transcends time and space and never goes out of style; it is the inexhaustible intellectual impetus that keeps us remaining true to our original aspirations and keeping our founding mission firmly in mind. “The Party’s Revolutionary Activities in Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia Made Historical Achievements That Will Shine for Thousands of Years” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the end of his inspection tour in Gansu on August 22, 2019. The article states that: Gansu is a revolutionary land that has played an irreplaceable and important role in the historical process of the Chinese revolution. The Shaanxi-Gansu Revolutionary Base provided a foothold for the Party Central Committee and the various Red Army units following the Long March. The article states that: Although the CPC Central Committee was only at Fragrant Hills in Beijing for six months, this place was the general headquarters of our Party in leading the War of Liberation to national victory and the great victory of the new-democratic revolution, and was an important symbol of the shift of the focus of the Chinese revolution from the countryside to the cities, and has a very important position in the history of the CPC and the People’s Republic of China. “Understanding History Is the Only Way to See Far, and Keeping Our Founding Mission Firmly in Mind Is the Only Way to Go Far” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the end of his inspection tour in Henan on September 18, 2019. The article states that: The Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Area was an important base for our Party to build itself and one of the birthplaces of the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army. The Jiao Yulu Spirit, the Red Flag Canal Spirit, and the Dabie Mountains Spirit are the valuable intellectual wealth of our Party. “Speech at a Ceremony Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China” was made by Xi Jinping on October 1, 2019. The speech recalls the great event of the founding of the People’s Republic of China 70 years ago, praises the great impressive achievements made by the Chinese people over the past 70 years, and declares the strong determination and firm confidence to keep making new historical achievements on the march forward. The article states that: Over the past seven decades, through concerted efforts and arduous struggle, the Chinese people’s great achievements have amazed the world. The Chinese people developed a great spirit of resistance in the magnificent process of the war against Japanese aggression. “Remaining True to Our Original Aspirations and Keeping Our Founding Mission Firmly in Mind and Progressing along the Long March of the New Era” is an excerpt from Xi Jinping’s speech at the end of his visit to in Hunan on September 18, 2020. The speech stresses that: Hunan is a communist hot land from which a large number of Communists wrote touching and heroic chapters. We should educate and guide Party members and officials in the revolutionary tradition, preserving the Party’s legacy, remaining true to our original aspirations and keeping our mission firmly in mind, and progress along the long march of the new era. We should have firm ideals and convictions, strengthen our beliefs, maintain the correct way of thinking and reinforce the marrow of our faith. We need to regularly visit communities so that we can understand the practical needs, expectations and concerns of the people. We should work to the satisfaction of the people and eliminate the malpractices of favoring form over substance and bureaucratism.
