A New Level of Understanding the Principles of Building
Socialist Culture with Chinese Characteristics:
On Xi Jinping’s Thinking on Culture
Feng Jun
Xi Jinping’s thinking on culture represents a theoretical encapsulation of the Party’s practical experiences in leading the development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the New Era. The fundamental questions that Xi Jinping’s thinking on culture seeks to address are “What defines the socialist culture with Chinese characteristics, and how should it be developed?” The adherence to the Two Adaptation, particularly the second, is a crucial requirement put forth by Xi Jinping’s thinking on culture to bolster the development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics. The implementation of the Seven Emphases represents the strategic blueprint and practical guidelines proposed by Xi Jinping’s thinking on culture for the development of this culture. These ideas enrich and advance the Marxist cultural theory, forming the cultural component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This signifies that China’s understanding of the principles governing the development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics has reached a new level.
The Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation:
A Civilizational Approach to Building a Great Country and Rejuvenating the Nation
Yan Xiaofeng
The modern civilization of the Chinese nation is a civilizational approach to building a great country and rejuvenating the nation, which signifies a new phase and apex in the evolution of Chinese civilization. This modern civilization has emerged through the historical process of Chinese modernization efforts. Chinese modernization has infused the Chinese civilization with contemporary vigor, while the Chinese civilization has provided the Chinese modernization with a deep-rooted heritage. The adaption of Marxism’s fundamental tenets with China’s actual conditions and the best of its traditional culture is the exclusive path to promote the modern civilization of the Chinese nation based on a civilization spanning over 5,000 years. This modern civilization has manifested itself in the creation of a new form of civilization, underscored its essence in fostering and generating a socialist culture with Chinese characteristics for a New Era, exhibited its value in advancing the progress of civilization, and has shone brightly in the new journey of building a great modern socialist country in all respects and advancing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts.
Reflecting Theoretically on the Grand View of History
Liu Shulin
The Grand View of History, as an important component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, is a contemporary reflection of the Marxist worldview and methodology. By emphasizing the comprehensive connection between the past, present, and future of history, the Grand View of History provides a broader scope for intellectual exploration in the field of historical science and enhances its practical guiding significance. By advocating for a broader temporal and spatial analysis of history, it offers a more comprehensive foundation for discerning historical patterns and adjudicating between right and wrong. The emphasis on grasping the theme, main narrative, mainstream, and essence of history and the upholding the revolutionary truths that have been tried and tested by hundreds of millions of people aid in countering the trend of historical nihilism. Furthermore, by emphasizing the observation of reality from the perspective of world history, the Grand View of History offers a well-designed roadmap for contributing Chinese insights and strategies to the global stage.
Three Forms of Practical Wisdom and the Superiority of Chinese Practical Wisdom
Wang Nanshi
The essence of practical wisdom is encapsulated in the approach to managing the relationship between value ideals and actual actions. Depending on whether the value ideal is perceived as transcendental or as existing in the real world, and its relationship with real life, practical wisdom can be classified into three fundamental forms: the Greek dualistic correlation of transcendence and empirical spatiality, the Christian dualistic correlation of transcendence and empirical temporality, and the Chinese Confucian differentiated united correlation between value ideals in the real world and real life. The first two forms, grounded in the dualistic correlation of transcendence and empiricism, tend to gravitate toward extremes and struggle to attain the Golden Mean that practical wisdom strives for. Conversely, the Chinese Confucian correlation that exists within the real world is more likely to achieve the Golden Mean, thereby demonstrating greater superiority for realistic practice.
Contemporary Context, Theoretical Underpinnings,
and Practical Strategies for Boosting the Growth of New Quality Productive Forces
Su Xin, Liu Haolong & Yang Zhiheng
In the context of today’s rapidly evolving world, where we are witnessing changes on a scale not seen in a century and a new wave of scientific and industrial revolution, Xi Jinping has presented the significant concept of new quality productive forces and articulated critical directives for their accelerated development. This article elucidates the multidimensional implications and main characteristics of new quality productive forces, in terms of priority, complexity, ecology, synergy, and humanism. It also explains the objective conditions and subjective motivations for speeding up the development of these forces. The theoretical logic of accelerating the development of new quality productive forces is revealed by discussing the mechanisms of driving forces such as technological innovation, industrial cooperation, demand orientation, institutional reform, and factor reallocation, in line with the main viewpoints of Marxist political economy. Finally, the authors propose practical approaches to accelerate the development of new quality productive forces, including strengthening key technological breakthroughs, improving industrial systems, deepening exploration of application scenarios, promoting multidimensional institutional innovation, and enhancing the supply of production factors.
Digital Imperialism: A New Feature or a New Phase?
Fang Min & Zhao Huaxi
The evolution of theoretical discourses on cultural and media imperialism, the swift advancement of digital technologies, and the resurgence of the “new imperialism” debate since the latter half of the 20th century have collectively facilitated the development of digital imperialism theory. According to this theory, the growth of digital platforms post-2010, the monopolization of digital technologies and data resources by transnational digital capital, and the shift of capital accumulation space from physical to virtual, all signify a new phase of contemporary imperialism. However, this paper argues that these new features neither encompass the comprehensive structure of contemporary imperialism, nor do they fundamentally differ from those exhibited since the 1980s during the information technology revolution and neoliberal globalization. While the digital economy has indeed imparted a new and significant dimension to contemporary imperialism, Marxist political economy needs to undertake a thorough and insightful study of the role of digital technology in global monopoly capital accumulation, and to understand the characteristics and laws of imperialism in virtual spaces. Nonetheless, it is premature to assert that imperialism has entered a new phase.
